Meet Koundinya
Koundinya is a computer science student at Georgia Tech and a part-time AI Software Engineering Intern based in Atlanta. He recently spoke with us about some interesting projects he’s been a part of during his internship experience.
“AI is going fast and it’s hard to keep up, but don’t be scared to use it. See where it can help.”
What is your role at NCR Atleos?
I am a part-time AI Software Engineering Intern on the generative AI team. We focus on using this technology creatively to bring next-gen solutions to the company. When I’m not at work, I’m studying—I’m currently a senior computer science major at Georgia Tech.
What’s it like to be an intern at NCR Atleos?
I’ve been able to work on impactful projects, and there’s a clear view of how these projects fit into the bigger picture for the company. That’s made this experience rewarding for me.
This summer was actually my third time interning at NCR Atleos; I keep coming back because I value the collaborative culture and the opportunities to innovate, combining traditional software engineering with AI.
Tell us about the project you worked on this summer.
I was on a team that created an American Sign Language (ASL) avatar powered by AI to improve ATM accessibility for hearing-impaired users. The system uses AI to translate traditionally audio-guided instructions into animated ASL gestures, so the ATM can display the avatar signing without requiring developers to know ASL. Essentially, AI handles the language conversion and animation generation, making the interaction comfortable and accessible for hearing-impaired users.

What would you say to colleagues who are hesitant to use AI?
AI is going fast and it’s hard to keep up, but don’t be scared to use it. See where it can help. Not everything really needs AI. Just use it where it provides value for you.
What’s the best thing about working for NCR Atleos?
The company’s innovation initiatives are a major strength, especially programs like the Hackathon, which was a complete playground for creativity. It allowed employees to experiment with tools and resources to bring ideas to life.
My team worked on a personalization tool for ATMs, which would allow customers to visualize ATM designs and placements using augmented reality. The whole experience fostered idea-sharing and hands-on problem-solving. It was a highlight for me and many other interns.

What advice would you give to another college student considering an internship?
Start as early as possible. You learn so much more from real-world experience than you ever will in a classroom. Classes teach you structured projects, but internships teach you how to think outside the box and solve problems creatively.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work and school?
3-D modeling is one of my main hobbies. I love creating designs and experimenting with different tools and techniques in that space.
I also volunteer with an organization called STEM NOLA. They host events and fairs for K–12 students to explore science, technology and engineering topics. It’s a great way to give back and share what I’m passionate about.
Thank you, Koundinya. We enjoyed learning about your innovative ideas and perspectives on emerging technology.
